9. Standing TKO on ‘The Bully’

Gray Maynard in January 2010 was one of the best lightweights in the world and seemed destined to someday capture UFC gold. He had already beaten Jim Miller, Frankie Edgar and Roger Huerta, and when he eked out a split decision over Nate Diaz, greatness seemed within reach. However, Maynard went 2-2-1 over his next five appearances, including two failed attempts to unseat Edgar at 155 pounds.

As a result, Maynard entered his rematch with Diaz at “The Ultimate Fighter 18” Finale under less-than-ideal circumstances. He was a viable threat in the division but had lost significant momentum. Diaz, meanwhile, came into the cage on the heels of consecutive losses to Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson. It goes without saying that it was a crossroads fight for both men.

Maynard executed an early takedown but could not corral the Cesar Gracie protégé on the canvas. When they returned to their feet, Diaz scored with a judo throw and started picking apart the three-time NCAA All-American wrestler at a distance. A short left hook rocked Maynard, and it was all but over. Diaz swarmed with punches to the head and body, forcing his rival to stumble around the Octagon. After Maynard backed himself into the cage, Diaz cut loose with another volley of punches upstairs and forced referee Yves Lavigne to step in.
