By The Numbers: Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz moves the needle with take-no-prisoners originality and mixed martial arts ingenuity.

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner remains one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most trusted box office draws despite a rather pedestrian 20-13 record that belies his importance on the world stage. Diaz’s name has been attached to some of the more lucrative bouts in recent memory, most notably his head-to-head series with Conor McGregor in 2016 and his one-off BMF battle with Jorge Masvidal in 2019. The longtime Cesar Gracie protégé currently finds himself on a two-fight losing streak for the fourth time in his career; he has never suffered three straight setbacks. Diaz last competed at UFC 263, where he dropped a five-round unanimous decision to former British Association of Mixed Martial Arts champion Leon Edwards on June 12.

As Diaz awaits word on his next assignment, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied him to this point:

36: Years of age for Diaz, who was born in Stockton, California, on April 16, 1985. “Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment,” “Mask,” “Ladyhawke,” “Cat’s Eye” and “Desperately Seeking Susan” were the Top 5 movies at the domestic box office at the time.

11: Diaz victories by submission, accounting for 55% of his career total (20). His methods of choice: four triangle chokes, four guillotine chokes, one rear-naked choke, one armbar and one keylock. Diaz owns five other victories by knockout or technical knockout and four more by decision.

2,386: Total strikes landed by Diaz as a member of the UFC roster, placing him fourth on the promotion’s all-time list. Only Max Holloway (3,056), Georges St. Pierre (2,591) and Frankie Edgar (2,479) have been credited with more.

He landed 238 of them in a unanimous decision over Donald Cerrone at UFC 141 on Dec. 30, 2011, 153 of them in a unanimous decision over Michael Johnson at UFC on Fox 17 on Dec. 19, 2015, 166 of them in a majority decision loss to McGregor at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, 2016 and 114 of them in a unanimous decision over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 on Aug. 17, 2019.

62: Rounds completed by Diaz during his 17-plus years as a pro. He has gone the distance 14 times and owns a 4-10 record in those bouts, including five-round defeats to McGregor, Edwards and Benson Henderson.

120: Seconds needed for Diaz to put away Dennis Davis with a keylock under the Warrior Cup banner on Aug. 12, 2006. Having occurred more than 15 years ago, it remains the fastest finish of his 33-fight career.

25: Submission attempts for Diaz since he joined the UFC in 2007, putting him fourth among active fighters. He trails only Jim Miller (45), Charles Oliveira (38) and Joe Lauzon (29).

1: Submission loss on the Diaz ledger. He surrendered to an armbar from Hermes Franca in a failed bid to capture the World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight championship at WEC 24 on Oct. 12, 2006.

5: Promotions in which Diaz has competed as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 15-11 in the UFC, 3-1 in the WEC, 1-0 in Strikeforce, 1-0 in Warrior Cup and 0-1 in Pancrase.
