By the Numbers: UFC 147, UFC on FX 4
It was a tale of two very different main events. The first one, the UFC on FX 4 headliner between Clay Guida and Gray Maynard, angered viewers for its overall lack of action. The second, the UFC 147 featured attraction pitting Rich Franklin against Wanderlei Silva, prompted more of a “Hey, maybe that card wasn’t so bad after all” type of response.
No matter your perspective, there is no disputing that the UFC provided plenty of fight-watching opportunities over the weekend. Based on the events that went down over the past two days, Maynard, Guida, Franklin and Silva should all have interesting futures awaiting them. But before we get to contemplating the fates of the weekend’s winners and losers, there are 23 recently completed fights to examine. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 147 and UFC on FX 4, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

UFC 147
2,004: Total fights staged by the UFC at the conclusion of UFC 147. The featherweight clash between Iuri Alcantara and Hacran Dias was the promotion’s 2,000th bout. The UFC has put on 1,055 fights since July 1, 2008 -- more fights than it has contested in the previous 15 years combined.
1: Mixed martial artists with two victories over Wanderlei Silva. Rich Franklin has now defeated the former Pride Fighting Championships standout in the Octagon at UFC 99 and UFC 147. Six other men -- Kazushi Sakuraba, Quinton Jackson, Mirko Filipovic, Ricardo Arona, Dan Henderson and Hidehiko Yoshido -- have faced Silva at least twice, and none of them own more than a single victory over “The Axe Murderer.”
122: Significant strikes landed by Franklin in his decision
win over Silva. The former middleweight champion outstruck Silva in
each round and held a 64-strike advantage against his Brazilian
opponent overall. His most dominant frame was the third, when he
outlanded Silva 21 to 2.
844: Significant strikes landed by Franklin in his UFC career, No. 2 all-time in the promotion. Only Georges St. Pierre, with 977 significant strikes, has more.
4-3: Record for Franklin outside the middleweight division since 2008. His last 185-pound bout came against Travis Lutter at UFC 83. Since then, “Ace” has competed in both light heavyweight and catchweight bouts.
2,184: Days since Silva last won consecutive fights. After earning a split decision victory over Ricardo Arona on Dec. 31, 2005, he defeated Kazuyuki Fujita in his next outing on July 1, 2006. Silva has gone 3-7 in his last 10 bouts since then.
5: Significant strikes by which Franklin outlanded Silva in round two, despite the fact that “The Axe Murderer” scored a knockdown and appeared to be on the verge of a finish as the frame expired. Silva did have a 45-to-28 edge in total strikes for the round, however.
8: Combined significant strike edge for “TUF: Brazil” winners Rony Mariano Bezerra and Cezar Ferreira in decision victories over Godofredo Pepey and Sergio Moraes, respectively. Bezerra outlanded Pepey 36 to 32 at featherweight, while Ferreira outlanded Moraes 42 to 38 at middleweight.
165: Significant strikes landed by Fabricio Werdum in his last three fights against Alistair Overeem, Roy Nelson and Mike Russow. “Vai Cavalo” has outlanded each of those foes -- a far cry from the crowning achievement of his career against Fedor Emelianenko, when he landed just one significant strike before submitting “The Last Emperor” with a triangle choke.
97: Months since Werdum last fought in his home country. Before his win over Russow, the jiu-jitsu ace’s last appearance in Brazil came when he defeated Ebenezer Fontes Braga at Jungle Fight 2 on May 15, 2004.
5: Takedowns for Hacran Dias against Iuri Alcantara. The Nova Uniao product dominated the featherweight bout on the mat, taking his foe down at least once in each frame and landing a total of 108 strikes -- most from top position. The loss ended a 13-fight winning streak for Alcantara.
90: Minutes of fight time in the six-bout career of Hugo Viana after “Wolverine” earned a split-decision nod over John Teixeira da Conceicao on Saturday night. Viana has gone the distance in all of his professional bouts, emerging victorious each time.
37: Total strikes by which Francisco Drinaldo outlanded IFL veteran Delson Heleno in his first-round technical knockout triumph. “Massaranduba” connected on 41 of his 47 strikes and thwarted each of Heleno’s four takedown attempts in the middleweight bout.
.720: Significant striking accuracy for Thiago Perpetuo in his third-round TKO win over Leonardo Mafra at middleweight. “Bodao” was at his most deadly in round two, when he landed 30 of 37 significant strikes thrown -- an 81 percent clip.
20: Fighters on Saturday’s card who are native Brazilians. Americans Rich Franklin and Mike Russow were the only competitors not from the South American country.

Gray Maynard slipped by.
556: Total strikes thrown by Guida and Maynard combined. Neither man landed with much accuracy, however. Guida connected on just 49 of his 327 attempts (15 percent), while Maynard landed 52 of his 229 strikes (23 percent).
0: Takedowns landed by Guida -- in three attempts -- over the course of his 25-minute conflict with Maynard. Heading into the bout the Jackson’s MMA member had landed 48 takedowns in the UFC, tying him for No. 6 all-time within the promotion. “The Carpenter” hadn’t failed to successfully execute at least one takedown in a fight since his submission loss to Kenny Florian at UFC 107.
.860: Percentage of takedowns successfully defended by Maynard over the course of his 12-fight UFC tenure, which ranks No. 5 among all fighters in the organization. Only Frankie Edgar has ever been able to take him down more than once.
505: Total strikes landed by Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher combined over the course of their UFC trilogy. The rivals combined to land 185 strikes in Atlantic City, N.J., on Friday night, the most of their three meetings. The two combined for 153 strikes in their intial showdown, which was won by Stout, and 167 strikes in the rematch in 2007, when Fisher emerged victorious.
729: Significant strikes landed by Stout in his UFC career, which is good for No. 6 all-time within the promotion.
4: Submission attempts by T.J. Waldburger in his loss to Brian Ebersole. While that tied the Texan with Ricardo Lamas for the most of anyone on the UFC on FX 4 card, it was three short of his career high with the UFC -- Waldburger attempted seven submissions in a win over David Mitchell at UFC Fight Night 2 in 2010.
1,379: Days since Ebersole’s last defeat as a pro, when he submitted to punches in a loss to Hector Lombard at a Cage Fighting Championships event. The 66-fight veteran has won 11 straight fights since then, including four in the UFC.
.570: Percentage of significant strikes successfully defended by Ross Pearson in his second round KO loss to Cub Swanson. Prior to the defeat, “The Real Deal’s” significant strike defense rate of 70 percent was ninth best among all UFC fighters.
50: Total strikes by which Ricardo Lamas outlanded Hatsu Hioki in their 145-pound encounter. The Top Notch Fitness representative owned a whopping 67-to-12 edge in strikes in rounds two and three, when he also had his opponent in danger with four submission attempts.
3: Total strike advantage for Ramsey Nijem in his first-round TKO win over C.J. Keith, who was clearly unhappy with referee Yves Lavigne’s hasty stoppage. Only five of Nijem’s 19 strikes were deemed to significant by FightMetric.com.
.830: Takedown percentage for Rick Story in his unanimous decision triumph against short-notice foe Brock Jardine. In addition to going 5-for-6 on his takedown attempts, Story outstruck Jardine 67 to 21 in the three-round welterweight affair.
6: Career victories via guillotine choke for Steven Siler, who submitted UFC debutante Joey Gambino with the hold at 2:47 of the first round in their featherweight bout. “The Ultimate Fighter 14” competitor has finished 12 of his 20 victories by submission overall.
39: Significant strikes landed by Matt Brown in the second round of his TKO victory against Luis Ramos. “The Immortal” landed 67 percent of his significant strikes while punishing his Brazilian opponent in the clinch for his third victory of 2012.
