Alexander Volkov may have just ended Alistair Overeem’s Ultimate Fighting Championship title dreams for good.

The Russian heavyweight was powerful and precise as he battered Overeem with heavy punches to earn a technical knockout victory 2:06 into Round 2 of the UFC Fight Night 184 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. That makes 22 career KO/TKO victories for Volkov, who has been victorious in three of his last four Octagon appearances. Overeem, who had won four of his previous five fights coming in, may finally be nearing the end of his UFC tenure after being completely overwhelmed by his opponent.

44: Significant strikes by which Volkov outlanded Overeem. Volkov landed 54 of his 88 attempts for a 61 percent success rate. Overeem, meanwhile ,landed just 10 of 20 significant strikes — a 50 percent clip.

47: Significant head strikes landed by Volkov. Overeem landed just three.

11: Significant clinch strikes for Volkov; Overeem had 0.

17: Career KO/TKO defeats for Overeem. That includes four in UFC competition — Volkov, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Curtis Blaydes, Francis Ngannou — since 2017.

6: Bantamweight wins for Cory Sandhagen since 2018, the second most in the division during that time behind only reigning champion Petr Yan (seven). Sandhagen submitted an early “Knockout of the Year” candidate with a flying knee finish of Frankie Edgar in the co-main event.

0:28: Time of Sandhagen’s win, making it the second-fastest flying knee KO in promotion history behind only Jorge Masvidal’s five-second finish of Ben Askren at UFC 239. Sandhagen’s knockout is also the sixth-fastest in UFC bantamweight history overall.

3: Knockout losses in his last six UFC appearances for Edgar. The former lightweight champion has also been stopped in brutal fashion by Chan Sung Jung and Brian Ortega since 2018.

2-7: Record for Michael Johnson since an upset first-round knockout victory against Dustin Poirier at UFC Fight Night 94 in September 2016. “The Menace” fell to Clay Guida via unanimous decision in a featured lightweight contest at UFC Fight Night 184.

74: Significant strikes landed by Alexandre Pantoja in a decision win over the debuting Manel Kape at flyweight. By comparison, Kape landed 49 significant strikes. Pantoja outlanded his foe 25 to 12 in Round 1 and 29 to 16 in Round 2, while Kape held a 21-to-20 edge in the final stanza.

1-3: Career record for Kape in fights that go the distance, including Saturday’s loss to Pantoja. The AKA Thailand representative hasn’t won a fight that’s gone the distance since 2013.

6: Consecutive victories for Beneil Dariush, tying him with Islam Makhachev and Leonardo Santos for the second-longest active winning streak in the lightweight division behind only Charles Oliveira. Dariush earned a hard-fought split decision over Diego Ferreira in a featured 155-pound encounter.

5: Takedowns landed in 15 attempts for Dariush, a UFC best in 19 appearances for the Kings MMA product. Dariush also logged 7:23 of control time compared to just 58 seconds for his opponent. In a competitive matchup where Dariush held just a 62-to-54 advantage in significant strikes, that proved to be the difference.

2,296: Days since the first meeting between Dariush and Ferreira. Dariush took a unanimous verdict against Ferreira at UFC 179 on Oct. 25, 2014.

17: Takedown deficit through eight UFC appearances for Mike Rodriguez, who was grounded four times en route to a second-round submission loss to Danilo Marques in a featured light heavyweight contest on Saturday. Rodriguez has yet to land a takedown during his promotional tenure.

100: Percent success rate on significant strikes for Marques, who connected on all 29 of his attempts. In 2020, the most significant strikes landed at a 100 percent success rate was 15 (Jordan Wright vs. Isaac Villanueva).

10: KO/TKO triumphs among 11 professional victories for Devonte Smith, who bounced back from his first career defeat to top Justin Jaynes via doctor stoppage 3:28 into Round 2 of their 160-pound catchweight clash.

135: Total strikes landed by Karol Rosa in a decision triumph against Joselyne Edwards at bantamweight. By comparison, Edwards landed 70. Rosa also held a 57-to-38 edge in significant strikes landed.

7: Takedowns landed in nine attempts by Lara Procopio in a unanimous decision triumph over Molly McCann at flyweight. The Brazilian landed six of her takedowns over the bout’s final 10 minutes as she wore her opponent down with grappling and wrestling.

115: Total strikes landed by Timur Valiev in a lopsided three-round verdict against Martin Day at featherweight. By comparison, Day landed just 24. Valiev also succeeded on four of six takedown attempts and enoyed 11:19 of control time in the victory.

0:26: Time of Ode Osbourne’s finish of Jerome Rivera in the evening’s opening bout. That is tied for the seventh-fastest KO/TKO stoppage in the history of the UFC featherweight division. Osbourne countered a high kick from his opponent with a precision left hand and then sealed his victory with a burst of rapid-fire punches on the canvas.

3: Fights on the preliminary card in which the winning fighter secured more than 11:00 of control time in a decision trumph, as Rosa, Procopio and Valiev all accomplished the feat.
