By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 223

Yadong Song made the extra rounds count.

In a bout that was originally scheduled for three rounds one week prior, the Team Alpha Male product scored a fifth-round technical knockout of Ricky Simon in the UFC Fight Night 223 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. The “Kung Fu Kid” has won four of his last five promotional appearances, while Simon sees a five-fight winning streak halted in defeat.

5: KO/TKO victories for Song, tying him with Sean O’Malley and Eddie Wineland for the fourth most in the history of the UFC’s bantamweight division. Only T.J. Dillashaw (seven), Rob Font (six) and Marlon Vera (six) have more.

105: Significant strikes landed by Song. By comparison, Simon landed 60. Song outlanded his foe in every frame but the first.

2: Knockdowns landed by Song, giving the Team Alpha Male product a total of seven knockdowns during his UFC tenure.

27: Significant body strikes for Song. Simon, meanwhile, landed nine strikes to the body. Song also held a 23-to-3 edge in signifcant leg strikes. Significant head strikes were much closer, but Song still held a 55-to-48 advantage in that category.

51: Seconds of control time for Simon after landing two of nine takedown attempts against Song. Simon now has 45 takedowns landed over the course of his UFC career.

4: Consecutive victories for Caio Borralho, tying him with Andre Petroski for the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s middleweight division. Only Dricus Du Plessis (five) has a longer streak at 185 pounds. Borralho earned his first promotional finish with a second-round submission of Michal Oleksiejczuk in the UFC Fight Night 223 main event.

8: Submission victories among nine professional MMA victories for decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rodolfo Vieira. “The Black Belt Hunter” rallied for a second-round arm-triangle choke victory against Cody Brundage in a featured middleweight affair on Saturday.

20: Significant strikes — including a knockdown — landed by Brundage in the opening round, when he appeared to be on the verge of finishing Vieira.

.680: Significant striking accuracy for Fernando Padilla in a first-round stoppage victory against Julian Erosa at featherweight. Padilla landed 20 of 29 attempts, a figure that included 17 significant head strikes.

39: Professional fights for Erosa, the third most among featherweights on the UFC roster behind only Daniel Pineda (45) and Nuerdanbieke Shayilan (50).

28: Significant leg strikes landed by Marcos Rogerio de Lima in a three-round verdict over Waldo Cortes-Acosta at heavyweight. By comparison, Cortes-Acosta landed 10 significant leg strikes.

82: Significant strikes landed by Cortes Acosta. De Lima, meanwhile, landed 59. Cortes-Acosta did his best work in Round 3, when he outlanded his adversary by a 43-to-17 count.

54: Significant strikes by which Trey Waters outlanded Josh Quinlan in a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph at welterweight. Waters outlanded his opponent 29 to 12 in Round 1, 35 to 18 in Round 2 and 40 to 20 in Round 3. Waters also defended seven of his opponent’s eight takedown attempts.

192: Combined significant strikes landed by Martin Buday (98) and Jake Collier (94) in a preliminary heavyweight clash. Buday emerged with a unanimous decision for his third straight UFC triumph.

11: Takedowns landed in 18 attempts by Cody Durden in a unanimous decision triumph over Charles Johnson at flyweight. Durden landed four takedowns in Rounds 1 and 2 and another three in the third stanza. His previous UFC career best was five in a victory against Qileng Aori at UFC Fight Night 198 in November 2021.

3: Octagon appearances for Johnson in 2023, making him the first person to fight that many times this year. Barring injury or unforeseen circumstances, Gilbert Burns and Jessica Andrade will join him next week at UFC 288.

4: Kneebar submission finishes in UFC women’s history. By using the maneuver to tap Stephanie Egger in their preliminary catchweight clash, Irina Alekseeva joined a select group that also includes Mackenzie Dern, Mayra Bueno Silva and Ariane Lipski.
