By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night Seoul

When it comes to prevailing in five-round fights, few are better than Benson Henderson.

In his second Octagon appearance as a welterweight, Henderson outdueled Jorge Masvidal to capture a split decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Seoul, South Korea, on Saturday. The MMA Lab product completed the last bout on his current UFC deal in typical fashion, as he did just enough to outwork Masvidal in a technical, back-and-forth battle.

While the former lightweight king’s future is uncertain, his status as a threat in two different weight classes is undeniable. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Henderson vs. Masvidal,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

5: Bouts on Saturday’s card that ended via split decision, a new UFC record for a single event. In addition to Henderson-Masvidal, four other contests ended in split verdicts: Alberto Mina-Yoshihiro Akiyama, Mike de la Torre-Yui Chul Nam, Tae Hyun Bang-Leo Kuntz, and Marco Beltran-Guangyou Ning.

6-0: Record for Henderson in five-round fights that go the distance in UFC competition. Along with Masvidal, “Smooth” has bested Josh Thomson, Gilbert Melendez, Nate Diaz and Frankie Edgar (twice) in 25-minute affairs.

217: Total strikes landed by Masvidal in defeat. By comparison, Henderson landed 138. However, Henderson did hold an 86-to-77 advantage in significant strikes landed.

66: Total strikes by which Masvidal outlanded Henderson over the final three rounds. “Gambred” outlanded his foe 46 to 22 in round three, 61 to 29 in round four and 33 to 23 in round five.

35: Significant strikes to the body landed by Masvidal. Henderson, meanwhile, landed 24.

20: Significant strikes to the legs landed by Henderson. Masvidal landed just four.

3: Takedowns landed, in 12 attempts by Henderson. Meanwhile, Masvidal landed one of five takedowns.

5: KO/TKO wins from the crucifix position in UFC history. With his stoppage of Dom Waters, Dong Hyun Kim joins Gary Goodridge, Paul Kelly and Jon Jones and Matt Hughes as the only fighters in the Las Vegas-based promotion to accomplish the feat.

91: Total strikes landed by Kim, who pounded away on a helpless Waters until a stoppage arrived at the 3:11 mark of round one. Kim has landed 1,030 total strikes during his promotional tenure, No. 9 among active welterweights and just behind Thiago Alves (1,034). Waters did not land a single strike in the bout.

12: UFC triumphs for Kim, tying him with ex-champ Johny Hendricks for seventh most in welterweight history.

34: Takedowns landed by Kim in UFC competition, tying him with Matt Riddle for No. 8 among all welterweights in the promotion. “Stun Gun” landed his lone takedown of the fight against Waters to move out of a tie with Neil Magny for ninth place. Josh Koscheck is No. 7 with 38 takedowns landed.

1-5: Record for Yoshihiro Akiyama since 2010 after the 40-year-old “Sexyama” dropped a split decision to Alberto Mina on Saturday. Prior to signing with the UFC in 2009, Akiyama had lost just once in 15 professional appearances.

28: Significant strikes by which Akiyama outlanded Mina during the third round of their welterweight clash. That strong finish came on the heels of a second stanza in which Mina dropped his foe and outlanded him by a 36-to-16 count.

7: Consecutive victories via knockout or technical knockout for South Korean prospect Doo Ho Choi, who dispatched “The Ultimate Fighter 15” veteran Sam Sicilia via punches 1:33 into the opening stanza of their featherweight showdown. Ten of Choi’s 12 career wins overall have come by way of KO or TKO.

17: Significant strikes to the head landed in 25 attempts for Choi during the abbreviated brawl, a 68 percent success rate. Sicilia, meanwhile, landed six of 16 significant strikes to the head, a 38 percent clip.

2: Previous occasions the fight between Choi and Sicilia was booked. “The Korean Superboy” pulled out of proposed bouts with Sicilia at both UFC 173 and UFC Fight Night “Mir vs. Duffee” before defeating his American foe on Saturday in Seoul.

21: Takedowns attempted by Yui Chul Nam in a split-decision loss to Mike de la Torre. “The Korean Bulldozer” landed just one of his takedowns in defeat, failing on seven tries apiece in rounds one and two before landing his lone takedown in seven attempts in the final stanza.

149: Combined significant strikes landed by Seo Hee Ham (71) and Cortney Casey (78) in their strawweight clash. Ham outlanded her foe 24 to 15 in round two and 31 to 25 in round three en route to a unanimous decision triumph. Casey, meanwhile, held a 38-to-16 edge in round three.

44: Time, in seconds, of Freddy Serrano’s technical knockout stoppage of Zhikui Yao, making it the fastest finish in UFC flyweight history. Yao’s arm was dislocated after Serrano slammed him to the canvas in the bout’s opening moments, bringing a premature halt to the contest.

4: Takedowns landed, in four attempts, by Dominique Steele in his victory over Dong Hyun Kim. The last of those takedowns was a vicious slam that resulted in a knockout triumph 44 seconds into round three for the 27-year-old American.

8: Knockouts via slam in UFC competition following Steele’s emphatic finish on Saturday morning. The others: Frank Shamrock, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, Falaniko Vitale, Josh Burkman, Gerald Harris and Rustam Khabilov.
