By the Numbers: UFC London

By most any measure, Tom Aspinall appears to be back to full health.

The British heavyweight made a successful return from knee surgery, as he rolled past Marcin Tybura in the UFC Fight Night 224 main event at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday. A barrage of ground-and-pound ended the contest just 73 seconds into Round 1. It was almost exactly a year since Aspinall injured his knee at the same venue in a loss to Curtis Blaydes in the UFC Fight Night 208 headliner. Now, he has the look of a future champion.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 224, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

364: Days since Aspinall’s last Octagon appearance, when he suffered a knee injury just 15 seconds in to his UFC Fight Night 208 headlining bout against Curtis Blaydes.

6: Finishes in six UFC victories for Aspinall. Five of those have occurred inside of a round. Aspinall’s list of victims is as follows: Tybura, Alexander Volkov, Sergey Spivak, Andrei Arlovski, Alan Baudot and Jake Collier.

43: Combined significant strikes absorbed in those victories. On Saturday, Aspinall outlanded Tybura by a 13-to-4 count in their abbreviated bout.

10: First-round armbar submission victories for Julija Stoliarenko. She used her signature maneuver to dispatch Molly McCann 1:55 into the opening stanza of their co-main event, flyweight clash.

142: Combined significant strikes — including one knockdown apiece — landed by Nathaniel Wood (84) and Andre Fili (58) in their action-packed featherweight duel. Wood imposed his will in Round 1 (37-17) and Round 3 (37-24) en route to a unanimous decision triumph.

30: Significant ground strikes landed by Paul Craig in the second period of his TKO win over Andre Muniz at middleweight. By comparison, Muniz landed eight. Craig enjoyed a successful 185-pound debut, as he stopped his foe with ground-and-pound at the 4:40 mark of Round 2.

39: Total strike advantage for Lerone Murphy in Round 3 of his decision triumph over Joshua Culibao at featherweight. In that frame, “The Miracle” landed a knockdown, was successful on two of three takedowns and attempted two submissions — all while logging 3:46 of control time.

12: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that saw the bantamweight fight between Davey Grant and Daniel Marcos in favor of Grant. However, judges Clemens Werner and Cezary Wojciechowski saw it differently, submitting 29-28 tallies in favor of Marcos to give him a split-decision triumph.

70: Significant strikes landed by Grant. By comparison, Marcos landed 48. Grant outlanded his foe 16 to 13 in Round 1, 26 to 15 in Round 2 and 28 to 20 in Round 3.

.600: Significant striking accuracy for English newcomer Mick Parkin in a three-round verdict over Jamal Pogues at heavyweight. Park landed 95 of 156 attempts in victory. Pogues was far less successful, landing 36 of 135 attempts — a 26% clip.

42: Significant leg strikes for Parkin. By comparison, Pogues landed 10.

13: Takedowns landed in 16 attempts for Makmud Muradov in a unanimous decision triumph over Bryan Barberena. That’s a new UFC middleweight record, besting the previous mark of 11 landed by Marvin Vettori against Kevin Holland in April 2021.

2: Knockdowns for Muradov, who also held a 54-to-28 advantage in significant strikes landed.

8: Bantamweight victories for Ketlen Vieira, who cruised to a unanimous decision win over Pannie Kianzad on Saturday. That total ranks No. 3 all-time in division history behind only Amanda Nunes (13) and Raquel Pennington (11).

10:49: Total control time for Vieira. The Brazilian went 3-for-3 on takedowns and also attempted three submissions in a dominant performance. Kianzad, meanwhile, logged just 2:11 of control time and didn’t have a single takedown to her credit.

50: Significant strikes by which Chris Duncan outlanded Yanal Ashmouz in their lightweight encounter. Duncan got stronger as the fight progressed, outlanding his foe 19 to 9 in Round 1, 26 to 14 in Round 2 and 40 to 12 in Round 3.
