The late-career resurgence of Glover Teixeira continued at UFC on ESPN 17.

Teixeira spoiled the return of Thiago Santos, as he tapped out his fellow former title challenger with a rear-naked choke at the 1:49 mark of Round 3 in the evening’s light heavyweight headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. It was Santos’ first Octagon appearance in nearly 16 months after injuring his knee in a title bout loss to Jon Jones at UFC 239 in July 2019, and while he looked dangerous during standup exchanges, he had no answers for Teixeira’s prowess on the canvas. The end result was the fifth consecutive Octagon triumph for the 41-year-old Teixeira.

15: UFC victories for Teixeira, tying him with Ryan Bader for the second most in the history of the light heavyweight division. Only Jon Jones (20), who defeated Teixeira via unanimous decision at UFC 172 in 2014, has won more at 205 pounds.

12: Finishes for Teixeira in UFC competition, the most in the history of the light heavyweight division ahead of Ovince St. Preux (11), Jones (10) and Chuck Liddell (nine).

18: Significant strike advantage for Santos in Round 3, where he dropped Teixeira early in the round and landed ground-and-pound from above. Eventually, Teixeira was able to reverse the position and secure the fight ending choke in short order.

148: Total strikes landed by Teixeira. By comparison, Santos landed 81. Teixeira outlanded his opponent 77 to 40 in Round 1 and 58 to 9 in Round 2.

9:03: Total control time for Teixeira in a contest that went a total of 11:49. The veteran Brazilian landed four of seven takedown attempts and kept Santos grounded for significant periods of time.

19: UFC victories for Andrei Arlovski, who edged Tanner Boser via unanimous decision in the heavyweight co-main event. That ties him with Diego Sanchez for the seventh most in the history of the Las Vegas-based promotion.

33: UFC appearances for Arlovski. Saturday’s fight moved the former UFC heavyweight ahead of Diego Sanchez and Demian Maia and into a tie with Jeremy Stephens for third-most bouts in promotion history. Only Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone have fought more, with 36 appearances apiece.

34: Significant strike advantage for Boser in defeat. That notably included a 46-to-12 edge in significant leg strikes landed.

4: Consecutive victories at 135 pounds for Raoni Barcelos, tying him with Merab Devalishvili for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s bantamweight division. Barcelos earned an entertaining unanimous verdict over Khalid Taha in a featured clash on Saturday. Barcelos has won five in a row in the Octagon overall, but his debut triumph came at 145 pounds.

120: Significant strikes landed by Barcelos, a UFC best through five bouts. By comparison, Taha landed 49 significant strikes.

8: Significant strikes landed by Giga Chikadze in a first-round knockout of short-notice foe James Krause-Simons at featherweight.

223: Significant strikes landed by Chikadze in his first four promotional appearances, all of which he won either by unanimous decision or split decision.

6: Consecutive victories for Xiaonan Yan, the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s strawweight division. Yan earned her most significant triumph to date at UFC on ESPN 17, taking a three-round verdict over former title challenger Claudia Gadelha. All six of Yan’s wins have come via decision.

74: Significant strikes landed by Yan. The China Top Team representative outlanded her foe 19 to 10 in Round 1, 26 to 17 in Round 2 and 29 to 9 in Round 3. She also defended eight of Gadelha’s 10 takedown tries.

578: Significant strikes landed by Yan through six UFC appearances. By comparison, Yan’s opponents have landed 327 significant strikes in those bouts. The lowest significant strike differential held by Yan during that time is 23, in a win over Angela Hill at UFC 238.

2: Knockdowns for Trevin Giles in a third-round stoppage of Bevon Lewis at middleweight. Giles landed just one knockdown in his first five UFC appearances.

10: First-round finishes among 13 professional victories for Alexander Romanov, who used the rarely-seen forearm choke to dispatch Marcos Rogerio de Lima at the 4:48 mark of Round 1 in a preliminary heavyweight affair. It is Romanov’s seventh submission triumph and third via forearm choke, though the other two came on the regional circuit.

14: Featherweight triumphs for Darren Elkins, the second most in the history of the division behind only former champion Max Holloway (16). Elkins halted a four-bout skid when he submitted Luiz Eduardo Garagorri with a rear-naked choke at the 3:33 mark of Round 3.

21: Appearances at featherweight for Elkins, tying him with Holloway for most in UFC history.

48: Career takedowns for Elkins, the most in the history of the UFC’s featherweight division.

5: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts in the first round of his matchup with Garagorri. That’s the most in a single round in the history of the featherweight division. All told, “The Damage” landed seven of 17 takedowns in the fight.

2,008: Total strikes landed by Elkins in his UFC career, No. 6 all-time in promotion history. By landing 96 strikes against Garagorri, Elkins surpassed Michael Bisping, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Demetrious Johnson and Rafael dos Anjos in that category.

1,463: Days since Max Griffin’s last finish in UFC competition. Griffin earned a TKO stoppage of Ramiz Brahimaj in a preliminary welterweight bout when he nearly knocked his opponent’s ear off his head at the 2:03 mark of Round 3. It was Griffin’s first finish since a 54-second TKO of Erick Montano in his second Octagon appearance at UFC Fight Night 98 on Nov. 5, 2016.
