By the Numbers: UFC on Fox 21

It’s getting increasingly difficult to deny Demian Maia.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt made a strong case for a welterweight title shot in the UFC on Fox 21 headliner on Saturday night, submitting Carlos Condit with a rear-naked choke just 1:52 into the opening round of their bout at the Rogers Center in Vancouver. It was the first time that anyone had submitted “The Natural Born Killer” in more than a decade.

Grappling dominance is nothing new for Maia in the Octagon, however, and the figures reflect his fine work in recent years. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on Fox 21, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

18: UFC wins for Maia, tying him for third most in UFC history with Donald Cerrone and Matt Hughes. Only Michael Bisping and Georges St. Pierre, with 19 apiece, have more.

9: Submission victories in UFC competition for Maia, tying him with Nate Diaz for No. 2 in promotion history behind only Royce Gracie (10).

24: Submission attempts for Maia, tying him with Cole Miller and Joe Stevenson for fifth most in UFC history.

6: Consecutive victories for Maia, the second longest active streak at welterweight in the UFC behind current No. 1 contender Stephen Thompson (seven).

3,738: Days since Condit’s last submission defeat, a rear-naked choke loss to Pat Healy at Extreme Wars 3 “Bay Area Brawl” on June 3, 2006.

13: Combined significant strikes landed by Maia opponents in his last four victories, wins over Condit, Matt Brown, Gunnar Nelson and Neil Magny. Maia and Condit combined to land just two significant strikes in their abbreviated main event encounter.

.600: Significant striking accuracy for Anthony Pettis in his featherweight debut, a third-round submission victory over Charles Oliveira. “Showtime” landed 53 of 87 significant strikes in the bout. Oliveira, meanwhile, went 41 for 86, a 47 percent clip. Pettis’ career significant striking rate is 42 percent.

4: Takedowns landed in 11 attempts by Oliveira, the most by any Pettis opponent in a fight won by the Roufusport product in UFC and WEC competition.

3: Finishes at strawweight for Paige VanZant following her second-round knockout of Bec Rawlings. That figure is the most in the history of the division. A jumping switch kick and follow-up hammerfists put Rawlings away 17 seconds into the frame.

4: UFC victories at 115 pounds for VanZant, the second-most victories in the division. Reigning champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is first with six wins.

16: UFC lightweight victories for Jim Miller, tying him with Gleison Tibau for the most in the history of the division. Miller took a split-decision triumph over Joe Lauzon in a featured 155-pound matchup at UFC on Fox 21.

26: Significant strikes by which Miller outlanded Lauzon. Miller outlanded the Massachusetts native 29 to 14 in round one, 26 to 25 in round two and 25 to 15 in round three.

3: Takedowns landed in four attempts by Lauzon, who got his opponent to the canvas once in each round. Lauzon also passed guard 10 times in the fight.

5: Middleweight finishes for Sam Alvey since 2014, tying him with Luke Rockhold for the most in the division during that time. Alvey added Kevin Casey to a list of victims that includes Eric Spicely, Daniel Kelly, Cezar Ferreira and Dylan Andrews.

59: Significant strikes landed by Alvey in his latest triumph, by far the most in his recent streak of finishes. Alvey landed single-digit significant streaks in the other four victories.

14: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the featherweight fight between Enrique Barzola and Kyle Bochniak in favor of Barzola. However, two of the three cageside judges awarded the bout to Bochniak, giving the Boston native a surprising split-decision triumph.

56: Significant strikes landed by Barzola. By comparison, Bochniak landed 41. Barzola outlanded his foe 14 to 10 in round one, 17 to 14 in round two and 24 to 17 in round three.

114: Total strikes landed by Alessio Di Chirico in his split-decision triumph over Garreth McLellen at middleweight. By comparison, McLellen landed 88 total strikes.

3: Times Thibault Gouti has been finished in three Octagon appearances after the Frenchman suffered a first-round TKO defeat to Chad Laprise on Saturday. Gouti also suffered submission losses to Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Teemu Packalen in UFC competition.

5: Takedowns landed, in 14 attempts, by Jeremy Kennedy in his unanimous decision triumph over Alex Ricci at middleweight. Kennedy landed one takedown apiece in rounds one and two and three in the final stanza.
