The Walkmen: UFC Fight Night ‘Cerrone vs. Oliveira’

UFC Fight Night “Cerrone vs. Oliveira” on Sunday may have started with a whimper, but it certainly went out with a series of bangs -- and taps.

Donald Cerrone faced Alex Oliveira in the main event at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, and their encounter wound up being somewhat anticlimactic. Cerrone forced Oliveira to tap to a triangle choke 2:33 into the first round. The result was not all that surprising, but the haste with which it occurred was a different story.

The action inside the Octagon was supplemented by the sounds outside it. Fighters walked to the cage to an assortment of songs, from hip hop and rock to folk. Cerrone’s entrance was trumpeted by his customary choice of Kid Rock’s “Cowboy.” He lived up to his nickname, riding his skills to a ninth victory in 10 appearances.

Meanwhile, Jackson-Wink MMA’s Derek Brunson got loose against Roan Carneiro, as he stopped the Brazilian with first-round ground-and-pound. His entrance track, Puff Daddy and the Family’s “Finna Get Loose,” set the tone for his latest triumph in the cage. The same can be said for Team Alpha Male’s Cody Garbrandt, who chose Queen’s “We Will Rock You” before rocking multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Augusto Mendes with fight-ending punches in the first round.

Other standout tracks included AC/DC’s “Stiff Upper Lip” (Shane Campbell), Lucy Spraggan’s “Unsinkable” (Anthony Smith) and Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” (Marion Reneau).
