Angela Lee Retains Atomweight Title in One Championship 'Century' Part 1 Main Event

Angela Lee had lost two in a row coming into her One Championship 'Century' Part 1 main event in Tokyo, but she was able to reverse her recent misfortunes.

Lee (10-2) was largely out-struck by reigning One Championship strawweight champion Jingnan Xiong, but “Unstoppable” used a terrific clinch game and timely takedowns to turn the fight in her favor. Xiong (14-2), who toppled Lee in March via fifth-round TKO, was ahead early by landing loopy overhand lefts to the face and scattered low kicks. Lee held her own and usually responded with strikes of her own, but the advantage on the feet belonged to the Chinese warrior.

Lee seized control of the bout in round three when she scored an early takedown and threatened with submissions, but she wasn’t able to put her rival away. However, Lee was rocked badly by a glancing high kick in the fourth but she sealed Xiong’s fate in the fifth. Lee created some controversy when she used a suplex in the final round and slammed Xiong down. From there, the Singapore native eventually took Xiong’s back and finished her off with a rear-naked choke with just a dozen seconds remaining in the fight.

The submission allowed Lee to retain her One Championship atomweight title, thus thwarting Xiong’s attempt at becoming a simultaneous two-division champion.

In the co-main event, former Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson continued his dominance in the lower weight divisions as he throttled Filipino grappler Danny Kingad for three rounds. “Mighty Mouse” landed several low kicks and a few scattered punches in the contest, but when he took “The King” down, he was in cruise control.

Johnson (30-3-1) took Kingad down virtually whenever he wanted and he used his immense wrestling prowess to control his foe on the canvas. Johnson threatened with cross-body key locks and kimuras, took Kingad’s back and dished out sporadic strikes from on top when needed. Kingad (13-2) never gave up, but he was in way over his head and the American walked out of the One Championship cage the victor via unanimous decision. The win gave Johnson the promotion’s flyweight grand prix title; Johnson said he is taking a lengthy break from fighting during the post-fight in-cage interview.

One lightweight champion Christian Lee won the One lightweight grand prix by dominating Saygid Guseyn Arsianaliev for three rounds. Lee scored several takedowns and had his challenger mounted four times, but “The Warrior” couldn’t put the Russian away. Instead, Lee settled for a lopsided unanimous decision win.

In other action Yuya Wakamatsu edged Das Hwan Kim via unanimous decision; Yushin Okami eked past Agilan Thani via split nod; Itsuki Hirata submitted Zika Ishige with an armor at 4:41 of the second; Lito Adiwang won at 1:57 of the first when Senzo Ikeda suffered an arm injury; Soon Chang Min subbed Phie Thaw with a rear-naked choke at 3:17 of the first; and Kwon Won Il took out Sunoto Peringkat with punches at 1:43 of the opening frame.
