It was business as usual in the lightweight division on Saturday night.
Islam
Makhachev retained his No. 1 ranking with relative ease,
submitting Renato
“Money” Moicano with a brabo choke in the opening stanza of the
UFC 311 headliner at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. While
original foe Arman
Tsarukyan might have provided a more stern test for the
lightweight champion, it currently seems unlikely that he will
retain his spot as the No. 1 contender after pulling of the main
event with a back injury one day before the fight.
Though it took a little longer, the top of the banamweight division also remains unchanged, as Merab Dvalishvili outworked Umar Nurmagomedov to retain his 135-pound belt with a unanimous decision triumph in the UFC 311 co-main event. It was unusual to see an Eagles MMA product wear down over the course of a fight, but Dvalishvili has continued to prove that he is a different breed during his ongoing 12-bout winning streak.
Elsewhere, it was a night of redemption for Jiri Prochazka, as he rebounded from his second championship loss to Alex Pereira with a third-round technical knockout of fellow former title holder Jamahal Hill. It doesn’t always look pretty, but the third-ranked Prochazka remains one of the top talents at 205 pounds — even if his desired triology with “Poatan” never comes to fruition. Meanwhile, Jailton Almeida secured a statement-making victory on the UFC 311 main card when he stopped Serghei Spivac in the opening stanza of their heavyweight clash. “Maladinho” remains stuck behind Curtis Blaydes at No. 8 due to a head-to-head loss, but with a 6-1 mark at heavyweight, the Brazilian is a talent to watch in the months to come.
Earlier on the card, Ailin Perez continued her ascent in the women’s bantamweight division, taking a unanimous decision win over the previously ninth-ranked Karol Rosa. With five consecutive UFC triumphs to her credit, “Fiona” is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore as a potential contender in the weight class. Perez’s biggest triumph to date allows her to make her Top 10 debut at No. 9. Finally, Tagir Ulanbekov won for the fifth time in six Octagon appearances, taking a three-round verdict over the previously unbeaten Clayton Carpenter. That allows him to take the No. 15 spot in the flyweight rankings over Azamat Kerefov, who suffered his first career defeat on Dec. 15.
